The 5 Best Kids Bikes: Comparison Charts & Ratings

Everyone loves bikes. Kids love riding bikes. What are adults but older, taller kids with less sleeping time? Being one of those older taller kids with less sleep time, my love and passion with bikes all started when I was young, and my passion for bikes grew more and more with each year.

I do have a few bumpy rides and scary falls, but I was relatively safe. One thing why my love for bikes did not waver is due to the sturdiness and mobility of kid’s bikes. My memory might be subjective since I honestly think I had the best kids mountain bike (I rode in one of the many mountain trails in Colorado), but that does not mean that the throne for the best kids bike will forever be uncontested. Below is review for the top rated kids bikes and you may find one that fits your children’s needs.

Buying Guide

The best bikes for kids should be affordable but durable, as per this YouTube parent perspective review. Biking is also very beneficial for your kids, as proven by a study, where 118 children from 5 to 14 years old were surveyed. Physical exercises, particularly swimming and biking, increased their bone mineral densities, meaning stronger bones and bodies. This is why it is extremely important to get one of the best kids bikes available, since it will help not only your children’s bones, but also give them a great hobby to have for the rest of their lives. The best bikes for kids should have great durability, can travel a lot of miles, is comfortable, is safe and should have other great benefits.

  • Great durability: One way to know if a bike is durable is through their materials. In order from the most durable, the materials used are carbon, titanium, manganese then steel. Carbon can be quite expensive but is both light and strong. Steel is still durable but can be heavier than most.
  • Can travel a lot of miles: Basically, how low is the need for maintenance. This also should factor in the durability of the tires, the bike frame and the pedals. In a sense, the weight also has some weight in this category, as the heavier a bike is, the more cumbersome it is.
  • Should be comfortable: The bike saddle or seat should be high or low enough for your child to be able to sit on. The handle bar should have just the right distance from the child so that they can maneuver well. It must not be too near or too far. Also, the handbrakes should be easy to use, and the pedals are easy to step on.
  • Should be safe: The handbrakes should function right away. It is better to have the pedal mechanism be hidden in the frame, but that is not necessary. The bike should also be strong enough to carry the weight of the child. The spokes in the wheels should be strong and the pedal mechanism should not be too tight nor too loose. Make sure that the bike saddle is properly fit and tight.
  • Should have other benefits. For instance, some mountain bikes do not have bells with them, which is a big minus since bells are a great tool for telling people that your child is there. Also, having bright pedal light stickers will help too, since not all mountain bikes have those.

Now let us go on to the list of the best bikes for kids.

RoyalBaby BMX Freestyle

Royalbaby is a company founded in 2008 and has quite a large number of bike products offered. While they offer some bike helmets and knee guards, their main products are their durable and wonderful bikes for children. Among their 31 products, this bike is their leading item.  It comes in 6 colors and all of them look really great. They are also very tough, and the bike frame is very sturdy. It also has a training wheel added, which is a great bonus for the children. Additionally, it also has a bell and a container for water. The seat can also be adjusted. Overall, a really great bike for your children.

Features

  • Steel bike frame: The bike is very sturdy! The bike frame is made of good grade steel, and the knobs are in a one piece, rather than two separate knobs. This makes the structure of the bike great for carrying children and making sure that they are safe and secure.
  • Wide knobby tires: This is a 2.4 inches wheel made of rubber. This makes the tire pneumatic, meaning the ability to ride is improved compared to other tires.
  • Front caliper brake and rear coaster brake: The brakes are very quick to use. They also have the right feel; not too tight nor loose.
  • There is a lot of additional freebies. The training wheels are great and very sturdy.  The bell is also good, and the water bottle is also a great plus.

Pros

  • It looks really well. The bright colors make it stand out, meaning that bikers and motorists can see them right away.
  • The bike is really easy to assemble. Virtually the whole bike is assembled the only things that need to be installed are the handlebar and the saddle. The training wheels are optional.
  • Brakes work really fast.
  • The wheels also have good friction and children can be assured they can drive really well.
  • There are a lot of bonuses, like the training wheels and water bottle.

Cons

  • A bit heavy since it is made of steel.

Overall Product Rating (OPR): This product gets 4.1 stars. I consider this the best kids bike available, not only because it is very sturdy, but also because it is very efficient regarding its price since there are a lot of freebies included.

Dynacraft Magna

Another contender for the title of best kids bike, this is a 16-inch bike that works great for the children around 4 to eight years old. It only comes in yellow and black, making it look like a bee. And you can say that it moves like a bee too, since it is quite faster than most. Dynacraft specializes on the outdoor sports activities, particularly for biking. They have both an adult and kid’s section, and you can say that they are one of the leading companies for kid’s bikes. Among their 5 bicycles for children, this is the best among the 5 children’s bikes.

Features

  • Steel bike frame:  The structure is made of steel. This makes it tough.
  • Rear coaster brake: Only one brake is present.
  • Only one color available, which is a combination of yellow and black.
  • It has a training wheel as a bonus

Pros

  • Brakes work really fast
  • The wheels also have good friction and children can be assured they can drive really well
  • There are a lot of bonuses, like the training wheels and water bottle

Cons

  • No bells are present
  • There are also no front brakes, only rear ones
  • A bit heavy since it is made of steel

Overall Product Rating (OPR): This product gets 3.8 stars. If it has a front brake and bells, this would be on par with the top bike. It is still a great bike, which is quite cheaper than the top bike.

RoyalBaby CubeTube

Another quality product from RoyalBaby, this is also a contender for the throne. This one has almost the same features of the top bike from the same company. There are a few reasons why this is not the top dog though; it is considerably more expensive and at the same time does not contain the freebies of the top bike. It does not have the water bottle while being costlier by 50%. IT justifies its price by saying that the rear brake is better than the brake from the top bike, RoyalBaby BMX Freestyle Kids Bike, but there is almost no difference in the performance of the brakes, since they both brake fast.

Features

  • Steel bike frame: The bike frame is made of good grade steel.
  • Wide knobby tires: This is a 2.4 inches wheel made of rubber. This makes the tire pneumatic, meaning the ability to ride is improved compared to other tires.
  • Front caliper brake and Quando coaster brake: like the other bikes, both brakes operate really fast. However, this brake is much smoother. However, that does not justify the large price difference.
  • Training wheels and a bell is part of the package.

Pros

  • There are 8 color combinations. The design for the wheels are also very eye-catching
  •  Brakes work really fast
  • There are a lot of bonuses, like the training wheels and water bottle
  • The wheels also have good friction and children can be assured they can drive really well

Cons

  • A bit heavy since it is made of steel
  • Too pricy in comparison to other bikes

Overall Product Rating (OPR): This product gets 4 stars. This receives the silver medal. It is a great product by itself, but the price does not justify its admittedly wonderful benefits. It also does not have the extra water bottle that its brother bike has. It fell just a bit short.

Kent Super 20

Kent is a company with a long and rich history. They are a family business in 1909 in New York. In 1958, they change the name to current company name Kent International. For more than a hundred years they have given bikes to both the young and the old. While they have since then branched out to bike accessories and even to custom made helmets, they still are a major player in the bicycle market.

Features

  • Dual Suspension Steel frame: The bike frame is very impressive if you look at it at an efficiency standpoint. The frame is both straight and curved, giving it both sturdiness and flexibility. This allows the weight to be distributed perfectly.
  • The wheels measure 20 inches, which makes this a tall bike and a comfortable ride. The spokes are thin but strong, and they work perfectly in supporting the structure of the wheel.
  • This only has one brake, which is the front handbrakes.
  • No additional freebies like a bell or a training wheel.

Pros

  • Only comes in the color red, although a visit to their website allows you to order a custom color
  •  The large wheels make the ride very comfortable. It allows the child cyclist to ride smoothly
  • The design is both efficient and beautiful
  • Brakes work really fast
  • This is a very tough bike

Cons

  • Heavier than most, due to the dual suspension steel frame
  • No freebies are given, only the bikes itself.
  • Relatively pricy compared to other bikes with similar prices but with more freebies

Overall Product Rating (OPR): This product gets 3.5 stars. If it has a lower price, then it would have a higher rating. As a product itself, there are few flaws. It lacks a bell and a water bottle, but those can be brought. A great bike, just a bit pricier than I want.

RoyalBaby Stargirl

Another great product from RoyalBaby, this bike is geared towards little girls. It looks very adorable and has basically all the features of the best kids bike, the BMX bike. This is a great gift for your little princess. These comes in 2 sizes, the 12 inches one for 2 to 4 years old and the 16 inches one for 4 to 7 years old.

Features

  • Steel bike frame: The metal frame is very sturdy and can definitely take quite the weight.
  • It is available in two colors, which is blue and pink.
  • Front caliper brake and rear coaster brake: The brakes are very quick to use. They also have the right feel; not too tight nor loose.
  • There is a lot of additional freebies. The training wheels are great and very sturdy.  The bell is also good, and the water bottle is also a great plus.

Pros

  • Your little princess would love this bike! IT looks really cute.
  • The wheels also have good friction and children can be assured they can drive really well.
  • There are a lot of bonuses, like the training wheels and water bottle.
  • Brakes work really fast

Cons

  • A bit heavy since it is made of steel

Overall Product Rating (OPR): This product gets 4 stars. This is a contender for the top bike, but it is limited since it only caters to girls. Admittedly, it functions really well as a bike itself, but it is also a bit pricier than the top bike the BMX kids bike.
